unholy reverence

I listen to NPR so I don't have to pray
and text my way down the 71 corridor
watching my speed linger at 82
I'm 63 and a terrible driver -- distracted
not by other drivers but by my restless
attempts to avoid the presence thick
and patient in the space between the
steering wheel and my chest.
I drag iced tea through a Starbucks straw
and check the GPS that shows
no change in the number of minutes
left to reach home.
